Sclerotherapy FAQs

WHAT IS SCLEROTHERAPY?
Sclerotherapy is a treatment in which microinjections are used to make spider veins and varicose leg veins disappear. The sclerosant solution used in the treatment causes unsightly veins to disappear in time.
WHAT IS A SPIDER VEIN?
Spider veins and varicose leg veins are especially common in women of ages thirty to fifty. Some research suggests the occurrence is related to estrogen and pregnancy.
Spider veins appear as a web-like pattern of small red or purple lines, particularly on the legs. They’re unsightly, but fortunately we can remove or reduce them through appropriate treatment.
WHERE IS SCLEROTHERAPY PERFORMED?
Here in Tucson, we perform sclerotherapy treatments using the Asclera system here in our office. It’s an outpatient procedure with little or no downtime.
We quickly identify the spider veins to be treated. There is only minimal pain, and we can help keep you comfortable.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NEEDED?
Individual needs vary. Most people have from two to four treatments for best results. If spider veins are few and mild, one or two sessions will be enough.
If the veins are numerous, or if they’re large leg veins, then more sessions will be needed.
WHAT HAPPENS IF SPIDER VEINS ARE LEFT UNTREATED?
It’s important to keep in mind that spider veins are an unsightly nuisance, but they’re not inherently dangerous to your health. Many people want them removed because they’re a clear sign of aging.
HOW LONG IS A SCLEROTHERAPY WITH ASCLERA SESSION?
Most people have at least several spider veins, and only about 15 or 20 small areas can be treated during each session. Each session lasts from about 30 minutes up to an hour.
WHAT ABOUT ACTIVITIES AFTER TREATMENT?
Most people immediately return to their normal daily activities. Walking for exercise is recommended not long after treatment. Yet, rigorous exercise or contact sports should be avoided for the first few days.
