Xeomin is a member of the newest generation of botulinum toxin Type A medications to treat facial wrinkles. Although used in Europe since 2005, it was first approved for use in the U.S. beginning in 2010.
Although related to Botox and Dysport, Xeomin has some distinct differences.
WHAT IS IS USED FOR?
Xeomin is used during anti-aging treatments to reduce facial wrinkles. It’s effective against frown lines, crows feet, and forehead wrinkles.
It’s sometimes also used to treat an unrelated medical condition – cervical dystonia, or blepharospasm, which is an unnatural turning of the neck.
Like the earlier generation of medications, Botox and Dysport, Xeomin also works by stopping nerve impulses to the facial muscles that cause wrinkling.
The effects of Xeomin begin about three to seven days after an injection. And, the improvements generally remain visible for 3 to 5 months.
HOW IS IT MADE?
The manufacturer uses a proprietary filtration and purification protocol to remove unwanted protein components from Xeomin. This means it’s purer, which also means there’s less chance of an allergic reaction.
HOW IS IT USED?
Like Botox and Dysport, Xeomin is injected directly into the area of the muscles being treated. The first effects usually appear within a week after treatment. And, the effects generally last about twelve weeks.
HOW IS XEOMIN DIFFERENT THAN DYSPORT AND BOTOX?
Not only is Xeomin purer, it can be transported and stored at normal room temperature, until the vial is opened. This makes it more convenient for practitioners, since the medication doesn’t require refrigeration as both Botox and Dysport do.
