Toenail Fungus

Expert treatment in Tucson for toenail fungus

Although it’s not life-threatening, toenail fungus (oychomycosis) is a condition which is certainly unsightly and often difficult to remove completely. Fortunately, at Mountain View Dermatology & Aesthetics here in Tucson we have a state-of-the-art laser treatment system to remove or reduce this fungus – The ClearSense™ and Clear Toe laser system by Sciton.

Fungus causes the nail to become discolored and deformed. The condition is unsightly and worrisome, especially for anyone who enjoys wearing open-toed shoes or sandals. Although not life-threatening, the fungus certainly creates a sense of embarrassment and fear.

For several reasons, this fungus used to be very difficult to treat: Topical medications don’t penetrate the nail, oral medications may cause unwanted side effects, and of course nails grow so slowly that positive results took a long time to appear.

An effective, non-invasive treatment for toenail fungus

Concerned by appearance, in the past some people chose surgery to remove the affected nail entirely, after other medical treatments fell short. Nowadays, though, we have a much easier and effective solution.

We use the Sciton laser system to treat affected nails This technique destroys fungus deep within the nail, which improves the appearance of the nail. Even in situations where the fungus may not be entirely eliminated, over time this laser treatment can still greatly improve the appearance of affected nails.

How long does it take?

We can treat each toe within a few minutes, so a thorough treatment of all ten toes usually takes about twenty minutes. The treatment is comfortable and non-toxic, and best of all, there’s no downtime – You can return to normal activities immediately after treatment.

Since this form of fungus hides deep within nails, several follow up treatments are necessary. We usually repeat the treatment two or three weeks after your initial visit, and then again after three months.

Keep in mind that nails grow slowly, so it may take three months after your first laser treatment before you see any progress.
