Dysport versus Botox: What’s the difference between them?
Here at Mountain View Dermatology & Aesthetics, we’re often asked about how Botox compares with other medications, especially Dysport.
With more than 3 million Botox treatments performed in the United States last year, the name Botox is already familiar to most people. Dysport is less familiar to the general public, although it’s rapidly becoming as popular as Botox.
Comparing apples with apples
Overall, Botox and Dysport are quite similar: They contain the same basic product, which is called botulinum toxin Type A, or simply botulinum-A toxin. This is a protein that relaxes targeted muscles, thus reducing facial wrinkles and other signs of aging.
Botox was introduced into the U.S. marketplace earlier than Dysport. Yet, Botox and Dysport had been competing together in Europe for several years before Dysport was introduced to the U.S. in 2009.
Both of these medications have a similar safety profile, that is, both are thought to be generally safe for use. And, both are typically injected in a series of treatments each three to six months.
One of the main differences between Botox and Dysport is the cost – Generally, Dysport costs less than Botox. This means that practitioners should be able to treat patients at a slightly lower cost, and pass the savings along to patients.
Smaller and faster
Dysport is a smaller-sized chemical molecule, so once administered it has a slightly faster onset of action in the body than Botox. For comparison: Dysport begins to work within 2 to 5 five days after injection, while Botox begins to work within 4 to 7 days.
Easier to diffuse
Another comparison between Botox and Dysport has indicated that Dysport diffuses through the tissues more easily, that is, the medication spreads throughout a wider area than Botox. This characteristic may offer an advantage in some parts of the face, or be a disadvantage in other areas.
Experience is the most important factor for success
Ultimately, who is administering the treatment is the most important factor for success, regardless of which medication is administered.
